Common Bermuda grass is a warm season grass that spreads by stolons (runners) on top of the ground and by rhizomos (roots) under the ground. It is a very adaptable grass that loves the sunny, hot conditions of the Southeast and will outgrow fescue grass. After the first frost, Bermuda grass will go dormant, turning brown in color and creating a blotchy appearance on the lawn. Bermuda grass, due to its aggressive growth and extensive root system, is very difficult to kill.

Nature's Select now provides more four major options to control Bermuda grass.

1) Lawn Renovation - Recommended for Irrigated Lawns Only Begin by fertilizing in May, Kill off the Bermuda by multiple Round-Up treatments over the summer, and follow by heavily aerating, raking, seeding and irrigating in the fall.

2) Keep It & Treat It - With Our Warm Season Lawn Program - Recommended for Irrigated or Non-Irrigated Lawns Nature's Select has a 7-visit program to promote a healthy Bermuda Lawn. This is a great option for high-traffic areas with full sun. We treat it with our Warm Season Program.

3) Live With It - Seed with Palmer III Rye Grass: late Oct or early Nov. Rye will provide a green cover during the time of Bermuda dormancy. This is the most cost-effective way to deal with Bermuda grass. It doesn't eliminate the problem, but it will camouflage the Bermuda when it goes dormant. See Warm Season Program.

4) Bermuda Suppression - This program is an alternative to using Round-Up to do a total kill out and starting over. This approach selectively suppresses Bermuda without killing the lawn. Four applications of control products are required beginning in May or June, and are scheduled about every 30 days. Success is reduced by any variation from this schedule of application.

The result of the Bermuda Suppression Program is a gradual reduction of the population of Bermuda grass. There are no drastic visual signs. Unlike the Round-Up method where the lawn is killed out, the Bermuda suppression program results in a subtle reduction in the aggressive encroachment of the common Bermuda grass. Fall aeration and seeding is essential to achieving a lawn where Fescue is dominant.
