How to Keep Your Boxwood Hedges Looking Good

Boxwood hedges have been used as landscape backdrops and privacy shields for decades. These shrubs are perfect for just about every home, and they’re easy to care for when you know how to maintain them. But, at Nature’s Select Triangle, we know it takes a special green thumb to work with boxwoods. So, here is a quick guide to help you keep your hedges looking great!

Basic Care

Boxwood shrubs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Regardless of what species of boxwood your hedge is, there are a few easy things you can do to keep it looking good and healthy. Most boxwood shrubs require less water than most other shrubs. Because boxwood plants have shallow root systems, they are happy with moist soil.

Furthermore, you may need to trim your hedges more frequently than other shrubs. Hedges need a trim every six months during summer, and once a year in the fall or spring. If you don't regularly trim your boxwoods, they'll start to sag and look shaggy. But a trim does not necessarily mean you need to use pruning shears. The edges of your boxwood shrubs, if well maintained, will typically look better without pruning shears.

Factors to Consider

Boxwood hedges come in many different shapes and sizes, some of which look nothing like traditional hedges. This means your overall hedge care depends solely on the type of boxwood you've planted. However, it's essential to understand that most boxwoods are fragile, often requiring a comprehensive care plan. Gardening may not be the primary activity of your estate, but if your boxwood is going to live in the landscape long after you have gone, it's time to invest in a professional care plan to maintain its health.

Maintain Your Boxwoods

The soft, silky texture of boxwood will delight you each season, and the leaves, flowers, and shrubbery will surprise you with their beauty. Boxwood hedges are easy to grow and maintain and they provide outstanding beauty all year long.
