4 Spring Projects for a Healthy Lawn

Homeowners across North Carolina are rejoicing because we’ve made it through another long, cold winter and warmer temperatures have arrived. Spring weather has a tendency to give us the project itch, so you’re probably ready to get your hands dirty. If so, it’s time to form a plan of attack! From fertilization to weeding to mowing, it’s essential to create a spring lawn care to-do list. At Nature’s Select®, we are landscaping experts, so let us tackle some of those items on your list so you can enjoy as much of spring as possible!

1. Prepare Your Equipment

Your lawn care efforts are only effective with the right tools. Now is the time to dust off the mower, shovels, and rakes to inspect their condition. Change the oil and sharpen the blade in the mower, and inspect the air filter and spark plug. And don't forget to remove any debris, such as branches and twigs, from your lawn before you mow.

2. Fill In Patches in Your Lawn

Now is a great time to plant grass seed to patch bare spots in your lawn. Spring showers will do most of the hard work for you, but water seeded areas daily for 1-2 weeks to ensure your patches are filled and your lawn is beautiful.

3. Fertilizers and Weed Treatments

Some of the most important steps to a lush green lawn took place last winter with winterizing fertilizer applications. With the groundwork set last year, spring lawn care will be easier. This is the perfect time to apply weed-preventing treatments to your lawn, to curb crabgrass and spring weeds while replenishing the root system with nutrients for vibrant strength all season long.

4. Flower Bed Care

In anticipation of spring growth, weed flower beds and remove any old foliage from last year, including ornamental grasses. Edge beds with a spade to define their edges. Finally, to deter weeds and polish your landscaping, spread mulch to create a layer 2 to 3 inches in thickness.
