Preparing Your Lawn for Fall

Step outside your Winston-Salem home in the coming weeks and you’ll notice a slight chill in the air! That’s right- summer is over, and it’s time to start preparing for milder temperatures and fall lawn care. At Nature’s Select™ Premium Turf Services, Inc. we believe great lawns come from expert care all year round, so here are a few things you can start doing as we prepare for fall.

Continue Watering

Homeowners tend to think they can stop their watering routine once fall begins. However, it’s actually important to continue watering your lawn throughout the fall in order to ensure your grass’ roots are durable enough to survive winter. Stick to your schedule for a few more weeks, and be sure to pay attention to the weather to avoid over-watering. Once the ground has frozen and your grass has gone dormant, you cant stop watering until spring.

Keep It Clean

A neat yard is a healthy yard, and that is true all year round. As you prepare for your last mow of the season, be sure not to leave your grass too long or too short. We generally recommend about 2.5 inches so your grass is tall enough to withstand the incoming cold weather, but not so long that it looks sloppy or will attract diseases. Additionally, make sure you aren’t leaving leaves or debris around your lawn. We usually recommend mulching your leaves so the nutrients can be absorbed back into your grass. However, if you prefer a cleaner look, you can remove them altogether.

Remove Thatch

Thatch is a layer of debris that can build up over time between your grass and the soil. In the fall, we recommend an aeration and overseeding treatment that will remove the thatch and allow more water and nutrients to seep into the soil. We also like to take this opportunity to overseed your lawn to fill in any dead patches and thicken your lawn. Doing this in the fall will set you up for a gorgeous, thick lawn next spring.

Fall is not the time to start neglecting your lawn. Make sure to continue to care for it year-round with the help from Nature’s Select™ Premium Turf Services, Inc. Contact us today at (336) 768-7999 to make an appointment for fall lawn treatments.
