What Type of Grass Is Best for Winston-Salem, NC

When it comes to choosing the right type of grass, there is no perfect solution. Each type of grass has different strengths and weaknesses, given the season. This is especially true for the Winston-Salem area where both warm- and cool-season grasses can flourish. A lot of the decision depends on your desired lawn care routine. Cool-Season Grasses

Cool-season perennial grasses utilized for lawns in Winston-Salem areas include tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescues such as creeping red, chewings, and hard. The majority of the winter is spent with cool-season grasses still green, in contrast to warm-season grasses. They are more suited to the piedmont region. These grasses function best in the spring and fall and tend to exhibit stress symptoms in the summer. This is particularly true when you approach the coastal plain. Although early fall is the optimal time to sow cool-season grasses, early spring sowing can yield respectable results. In general, it is not advised to sow these grasses in late winter or early spring.

Warm-Season Grasses

Warm-season perennial grasses include bahiagrass, carpetgrass, zoysiagrass, centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass, and carpetgrass. The majority of these, with the exception of bahiagrass, are suggested for lawns in the piedmont region. The summer months are when they grow the fastest before going dormant in the fall at the first hard frost, turning brown, and then gently greening up the following spring. As a result, the further east and south you travel in certain areas, the better they often perform. Late spring and early summer are the ideal times to sow warm-season grasses. Some warm-season grasses require sodding or other vegetative methods to be seeded because seeds are either unavailable or do not produce consistent stands, unlike cool-season grasses. Instead of being blended, warm-season grasses are often seeded or planted as a single variety.
