Appearance & Damage
In the adult stage, sod webworms turn into moths and are ½ to ¾ inch long and appear in pink, yellow, or light brown hues.
- Webworms overwinter underground as larvae in silk-lined tubes.
- In early spring they feed on upper root systems, stems, and blades of grass.
- Much of the damage to turfgrass occurs in this larvae stage as they eat their way through the grass, cutting off the grass blades just above the thatch line and pulling them into their tunnels to eat.
- By contrast, the moths live just a few days, feeding only on dew. However, the presence of moths often indicates an infestation of larvae.
- Damage appears as small brown patches of closely cropped grass. You may even be able to see bite marks on the grass. When large numbers of sod webworms are present, damage can manifest as large, irregular brown patches in your lawn.
Sod Webworm Treatment
The first step in sod webworm management is to create healthy soil with seasonal applications of our Nature's Select Solutions. This is our proprietary blend of nutrients, minerals, and other natural ingredients that replenish depleted soil with living organisms. Healthy lawns require healthy soils, which together attract beneficial insects that feed on the larvae. We will judiciously use insecticides in the case of large infestations. These are effective against other insects, such as grubs, army worms, and chinch bugs too.
