3 Facts About Bermuda Grass

If you own a home, then you know there are several different lawn grasses to choose from. Reading about all of your options can be overwhelming, and you could end up spending more money than necessary on a grass that won't do well in the climate here in North Carolina. Here at Nature's Select Piedmont, we often get questions from people about Bermuda grass and if it's right for their lawns. While technically a weed, Bermuda grass can work for you when well-controlled and well-maintained. Here is what you need to know.

3 Facts About Bermuda Grass-Upclose picture of bermuda lawn

1. Bermuda Grass Is Turf Grass

In the southern United States, Bermuda grass is commonly used in either pastures for grazing or as turf grass on athletic fields and in parks. While technically a weed that can grow out of control, this grass is drought-resistant and can tolerate low-mowing or repeated grazing from farm animals. Furthermore, this grass is a perennial, which means it's easy to maintain year after year, and quickly spreads to fill in gaps whenever they appear.

2. Bermuda Grass Thrives in the Sun

Bermuda grass is a species that loves open, sunny areas. If your lawn lacks any shade, then you can expect Bermuda grass to thrive. Once established in your lawn, Bermuda grass quickly spreads out radially. You will likely begin to see large green patches in your lawn as the seasons change and other grasses become stressed by drought or heat.

3. Bermuda Grass Requires More Control & Maintenance

Because this type of grass grows rather quickly, its control and maintenance are essential. If you're thinking about planting this type of grass, then you'll want to seed it in early spring, right after the last frost. Yet, if you're looking for control and maintenance of this grass, then you need natural solutions that won't harm the rest of your lawn.

North Carolina homeowners routinely mistake it for drought, dull mower blades, insect feeding, or brown patch, which sends the wrong fix at the wrong […]

Fall overseeding for a healthy, dense lawn
Pre-emergent herbicides stop seeds from developing into seedlings, and grass seed is a seed. Apply most fall pre-emergents, and you block your own overseeding for 12 to 16 weeks. The way out is to choose an active ingredient labeled for use at seeding, or to sequence the two jobs across the calendar. A cart rolls […]

Mowed green lawn with a band of small soil cores from core aeration breaking down into the grass beside a driveway
Lawn care after aeration comes down to fourteen days. Water lightly two or three times a day for the first week to keep the top inch of soil damp, and leave the soil plugs in place to break down. Stay off the turf, hold off on mowing until new fescue reaches 3.5 inches, and skip […]
